The Compassionate Kids chapter for the state of Georgia is
hosting an “Oil On Ice” Party to help teach how saving energy
helps the Earth. Broken into age-appropriate sections, the party
will consist of the following:
- FIRST SECTION IS FOR THE YOUNGER AUDIENCE MEMBERS -
1:30
PM – Lesson on How Saving Energy Helps the Earth will
introduce the following:
-
What energy is
-
What some different types of energy are and how the different
types of energy affect the earth
-
How
we can make a difference by using less energy and making good
choices
1:45 PM – View short (four-minute) documentary “Oil On Ice”
This
is a beautiful documentary produced by the Sierra Club that
touches on the story of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and
the effort to drill for oil there. The wildlife and nature
scenes are exquisite, and the Native American music is moving. A
preview of the entire short film is available online at
www.oilonice.org.
2:00 PM – Popcorn and optional letter signing
We
will have available a poster board letter asking our legislators
to protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
Children who choose to may sign or draw on the poster.
- THE SECOND SECTION IS FOR THE OLDER AUDIENCE MEMBERS -
2:15 PM – View the long (one-hour) documentary “Oil On Ice”
The
full-length version of this beautiful documentary produced by
the Sierra Club tells the story of the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge and the effort to drill for oil there. It explains the
animals’ need for a wildlife area free of man’s development, the
devastating impact of oil spills, the hardship that the loss of
animal habitat brings on the native people, and how the
tremendous progress in creating high fuel-efficiency vehicles
has the potential to solve the energy crisis. While this
documentary would most likely be approved by the majority of
parents, the full-length program would be slightly better for an
older audience due primarily to the length. Young children would
have trouble sitting through the whole thing. Also, parents of
young children should note that there are a couple of mild
scenes that portray some of the hardships of oil spills, and
those who are very sensitive to hunting issues should note that
the documentary supports the practice of the native people
hunting (for survival rather than sport).
3:30 pm – More popcorn and optional letter writing
Sample
letters, paper, pens, stamps, and legislators’ addresses will be
available after the program so that those who are interested in
doing so may write letters to legislators asking them to protect
the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska from future oil
drilling.
4:00 PM – Hybrid Car Demonstration
For those who are interested, information (possibly even an
on-site example) will be available about Hybrid cars. For
example, did you know the Honda Insight gets 70 miles per gallon
and never needs to be plugged in?
