History
The Juneteenth (Heritage) Festival was established in June of
1865 to celebrate freedom from slavery as mandated by the
Emancipation Proclamation. This event was the cornerstone of the
national observance of African-American Emancipation Day of June
19 in Texas. Due to this act, Juneteenth has been celebrated
throughout the country. The people of Griffin have been
gathering for years to celebrate this event through the
organized efforts of David Wolfork, William "Pop" Ellis and
Marvin Barrow. The Juneteenth Committee gives thanks to each of
these individuals for their past dedication. However, over the
years, the torch began to weaken and as new voices emerged,
Juneteenth was relit through the strength, courage and
perseverance of Eve Anderson. Griffin is in its 2nd year of
organized celebration and the Junetennth Committee would like to
thank everyone for making past events memorable.
Our Mission
The Mission of the Juneteenth (Heritage) Festival is to promote

celebration which
strives to strengthen the community by getting to know your
