The
official Compassionate KidsSM
event for the month of May 2005 is a visit to Noah's Ark Animal
Sanctuary in Locust Grove, Georgia (about 40 minutes south of
Atlanta). This event is appropriate for all ages: Toddlers,
teens, and adults will all appreciate various aspects of this
event.
The philosophy of Noah's Ark is to bring children and animals
together to provide a unique approach to rehabilitation for
both. In addition to a group home for children in foster care,
Noah's Ark facilities include an animal rehabilitation clinic
and sanctuary.
Located on 250 acres in Locust Grove, Georgia, they provide a
loving home for abused, unwanted, and orphaned animals. Noah's
Ark is not a zoo or humane society but a place dedicated to the
care and treatment of wildlife, domestic livestock, exotic
animals, and birds.
The
care of wildlife can be a lengthy and complex process depending
on the species and the extent of injuries. If injuries are so
debilitating that the animal cannot be released, it will stay at
Noah's Ark the remainder of its life in as natural a habitat as
possible. Exotic animals, such as tigers, primates, etc., having
no "home" in North America, receive permanent residence at
Noah's Ark. Presently, Noah's Ark has about 800 permanent
"residents."
During this field trip,
a Noah's Ark staff member will speak to the group, describing
stories of some of the rescued animals and discussing the role
of the sanctuary in caring for all lives.
COST & RSVP
The cost for the field trip is a recommended donation of $4.00 donation per person.
The facility relies on donations, so any additional contribution
you wish to give would be greatly appreciated. Alternately,
please don't let the suggested donation be a deterrent for those
on a more limited budget; just donate what you can with exact change in cash in an envelope with your
family name on it. Please RSVP using our online form at
www.compassioantekids.com/rsvp.html
We
will meet at 10:00 am in the meadow next to the Welcome Center
where there are gazebos and bird displays. There is no rain date
available, so if the weather is prohibitive, a cancellation will
be sent via email to those who have submitted an RSVP.
COME PREPARED
This
field trip includes lots of walking on (flat, smooth)
nature trails. Be sure to dress with very comfortable walking shoes!
Strollers are highly recommended, as well as sunscreen and a
bottle of water. The tour will last about 45 minutes to an hour
but people may feel free to linger over their favorite areas.
There are picnic tables available, so be sure to bring your
picnic lunch for after the tour.
