The
Georgia Chapter of Compassionate Kids has arranged a field trip
to Gaia Gardens, an organic farm located in Atlanta.
Gaia Gardens is a community farm, owned by
East Lake Commons Co-housing Community and run by an
independent farmer. The farm is 5 acres, including hillsides,
forest fragments, and an acre spring-fed pond. The 1.5 acre
growing space is a patchwork of fields dedicated to rotations
that include an intensive cover cropping schedule.
The
field trip will include a tour of the farm, where seasonal
plants one may see include kale, collards, Swiss chard,
lettuce, broccoli, and cabbage. One may also see how shitake
mushrooms are grown. A tour of the green house will show newly
potted seedlings, and one may learn how potting soil is made.
This
field trip will also teach the following:
-
What is "organic" and why is it important?
-
What is "sustainable agriculture" and why is it important?
-
What are "cover crops" and why are they important?
-
What is "compost" and why is it important?
